I just wanted to post a small update on the new film I’m working on. It’s taking awhile to write because I’ve been racking my brain on all the little details and the development of the characters.
One thing I can say for sure about the project is that it will not be a genre piece like The Can-Cannibals trailer was, it is not an homage, it is not self-aware nor is it “retro.” This decision is not because I don’t like retro movies/concepts it is because I already did it with The Can-Cannibals and I don’t want to feel stuck in a single genre; and if I feel like it I’ll return to that formula when it’s appropriate. Though originally it was inspired by genre cinema: slasher films and giallo films (Italian murder mysterious which had early traits of the American slasher films from the 80s) it is has now grown into a new beast and is not restricted by the tropes or “rules” of a slaher movie. My film shares same basic traits of a slasher: mysterious killer who uses mostly knives to kill their victim, and a somewhat high body count, but how I turn that into something new/different is the challenge.
Also I want to say is to expect this film to be dark. The subject matter is dark, every character is damaged and/or has a painful past which comes into play in the present. At times the film is psycho-sexual, it’s depraved, depressing and (hopefully) really good. There’s still humor to be found in the film but more like a Cohen brother’s way of humor where characters are just funny because of who they are as people.
Right now there are about 12 central characters and most of them are female, though I may trim it a bit. The age range is pretty wide, but a majority of the characters are young (20-30). And it will be open to all races/ethnicities once auditions and casting begins. I really hope to at least finish writing it in the 1st quarter of 2014.
I will say there are two main films I’m (currently) taking influence from and if you know these films you’ll get a good understanding of the overall tone I’m going for and how far I want to take my film. Hopefully I’ll have more news sooner rather than later. Happy New Year!
